Synopsis

After an incident with an abusive partner leaves Maddie’s nine- year-old daughter Caroline with a broken arm, the two are forced to make a hasty escape. Hoping her own long-estranged mother will take them in ten years after Maddie’s catastrophic struggles with addiction, Maddie—now eight years sober—decides to bring Caroline to her childhood home. But when their surprise arrival receives a less-than-warm welcome, Maddie struggles to navigate her and Caroline’s future as trust is challenged, ultimatums are made, and the past proves impossible to forgive or forget.

Casting & Production

Casting

MADDIE — 28. So tired. Not entirely sure what energy she has left to run on, but she’s still going. Several tattoos hint at the remnants of a punk aesthetic.

CAROLINE — 9. Maddie’s daughter. Bright, inquisitive, thoughtful. Knows herself remarkably well.*

RHEA — Late 50s/Early 60s. Maddie’s mother. Comes from wealth. Warmth is not intuitive for her, but it’s not entirely out of reach.

WAITRESS — A waitress. Likely an internal cover or the actress who plays Rhea.

*Caroline must be played by a trans girl and/or nonbinary performer.

Media

"One of the best new plays to open this year."

— The Wrap

"An intimate, closely observed play with astute things to say about transgender identity and acceptance, but also about addiction, recovery, wealth, class, family dynamics and the uphill climb it can be to lead a scrupulously honest life."

— The New York Times

"It’s refreshing to come across a play like Preston Max Allen’s CAROLINE… Allen is writing about something that’s on our newsfeeds daily, but crucially, that thing doesn’t flatten or predetermine his people."

— Vulture
