Since its electric Broadway and West End debut in the early 1970’s, GREASE has remained one of the world’s most popular and enduring musicals. Funny, frank and featuring the hit songs “Greased Lightnin’,” “Hopelessly Devoted to You,” “You’re The One That I Want,” and “Summer Nights,” GREASE follows the journey of Danny and Sandy, alongside the Burger Palace Boys and the Pink Ladies, as they navigate high school to the unforgettable rock n’ roll soundtrack that defined generations.
GREASE Young@Part® is an adaptation of the full-length musical GREASE, one of the world’s most popular and enduring musicals by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey. TRW’s Young@Part® series is specifically crafted for students 15 years and younger, adjusting the score for younger voices, simplifying harmonies, increasing the number of speaking roles, and creating a more manageable production for school students and youth theatres. These musicals, approximately 60 minutes in length, feature expandable casts and large group numbers so that everyone can shine. Whether you are a seasoned theatre director or a volunteer directing a musical for the first time, we have valuable tips and information for you not only in this Director’s Guide, but also sprinkled throughout the script.
SANDY DUMBROWSKI — Sweet, wholesome, naïve, cute, like Sandra Dee of the “Gidget” movies.
DANNY ZUKO — The leader of the Burger Palace Boys. He has an air of cool, easy-going charm. He is strong and confident.
THE “PINK LADIES” — The club-jacketed, gum-chewing girls’ gang that hangs around with the “Burger Palace Boys.”
RIZZO — Leader of the Pink Ladies. She is tough, sarcastic, and outspoken, but vulnerable.
FRENCHY — A dreamer. Good-natured, but not too smart. She is fussy about her appearance — particularly her hair. She can’t wait to finish high school so she can be a beautician.
MARTY — Looks older than the other girls, but betrays her real age when she opens her mouth. She tries to act sophisticated.
JAN — A compulsive eater. She is loud and pushy with the girls, but shy with boys.
THE “BURGER PALACE BOYS” — A super-cool group of high school wheeler-dealers… or so they think.
KENICKIE — Second-in-command of the Burger Palace Boys. He is tough and avoids any show of softness. Has an off-beat sense of humor.
DOODY — Youngest of the guys. Small, boyish, open, with a disarming smile and a hero-worshipping attitude toward the other guys. He likes to play the guitar.
ROGER — The class clown. Full of mischief, half-baked schemes, and ideas.
SONNY LATIERRI — A braggart and wheeler-dealer who thinks he’s a real ladies man. He comes from an Italian family.
PATTY SIMCOX — A dedicated cheerleader. Confident and given to bursts of enthusiasm. She can also twirl a baton.
CHA-CHA DIGREGORIO — Shy and not confident. She takes pride in being “the best dancer at St. Bernadette’s.”
EUGENE FLORCZYK — The class valedictorian. He is physically awkward, with weak eyes and a high-pitched voice. He is gullible.
VINCE FONTAINE — A “teen audience” radio disc jockey. Slick, egotistical, fast-talking.
TEEN ANGEL — A good-looking falsetto-voiced, Fabian-look-alike. A singer who would have caused girls to scream back in 1958.
MISS LYNCH — An old, unmarried English teacher.
RADIO VOICE — Soloist in “It’s Raining on Prom Night”
JOHNNY CASINO — Soloist in “Born to Hand Jive”
Opportunities for flexible casting in CHORUS of Students at Rydell High School.
